| The following interview article with
Dr. Barkalow appeared in the July 1994 Vol. 10, No. 7 issue of the OR
Manager. The article addresses important specific
concerns to properly manage medical devices unique to surgery. Some of these devices are pneumatically powered and
are difficult to access by hospital biomedical personnel because of
sterilization protocols. Nonetheless, these medical devices need
consideration for inclusion in hospital preventive maintenance and
maintenance programs. Also, user training associated with these
devices must carefully handled and documented to meet JCAHO and other
relevant standards of care for diagnostic and therapeutic devices.
Even though JCAHO standards have changed since 1994, the essential features of medical equipment management discussed in this article remain relevant. |
